Our Review Methodology

Every platform we review goes through a standardized testing process. Here is exactly how we evaluate and score AI companion platforms.

Testing Process

Each platform review involves:

  1. Minimum 5-day testing period — We use each platform daily across multiple sessions to evaluate consistency and long-term quality.
  2. Paid tier testing — We purchase premium subscriptions with our own funds to test the full feature set.
  3. Structured scenarios — We run each platform through identical test scenarios covering casual conversation, emotional support, humor, roleplay, and technical topics.
  4. Cross-platform comparison — We compare results against the same scenarios on competing platforms tested the same month.
  5. Quarterly re-testing — We re-evaluate platforms every quarter to account for updates, new features, and pricing changes.

Scoring Criteria

We evaluate platforms across 8 weighted criteria. Each criterion is scored from 0 to 10. The overall score is a weighted average.

Conversation Quality

20%

How natural, engaging, and emotionally nuanced are the AI responses? We test with multiple conversation styles, emotional scenarios, humor, and topic changes.

Customization

15%

How much control do you have over personality, appearance, backstory, and behavior? We assess both the tools available and the quality of their output.

Image Generation

15%

Quality, consistency, and variety of generated images. We evaluate realism, character consistency across multiple generations, and style range.

Video Features

10%

Video call quality, generated video content, and avatar animation. This is a newer feature category that not all platforms offer yet.

Voice Chat

10%

Voice message and call quality, emotional inflection, natural speech patterns, and latency. We test in quiet and noisy environments.

Memory

10%

Short-term and long-term conversation memory. We test recall of specific details after 1 day, 7 days, and 30 days of conversation.

Privacy

10%

Data handling policies, encryption, data deletion options, third-party sharing, and overall transparency about how your conversations are stored and used.

Value for Money

10%

What you get relative to what you pay, compared to competing platforms. Free tier quality, premium tier pricing, and feature-to-price ratio.

Score Interpretation

  • 9.0 – 10.0: Excellent — Best in class. Few or no significant weaknesses.
  • 8.0 – 8.9: Very Good — Strong platform with clear strengths and minor weaknesses.
  • 7.0 – 7.9: Good — Solid option with some notable limitations.
  • 6.0 – 6.9: Average — Functional but behind competitors in key areas.
  • Below 6.0: Below Average — Significant issues. We generally do not recommend platforms scoring below 6.0.
